Banpu gets the green light for two US

Apr 13, 2024

Energy provider Banpu Public Company Limited has achieved a final investment decision on two US-based carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) projects, making it the first Thai company to do so.

Both interlinked, the two projects represent a combined estimated investment of up to $58m.

The first CCUS project, the Barnett Zero project, is believed to be one of the first permanent commercial carbon dioxide (CO2) disposal and sequestration projects in the US. Once fully operational, the project will separate CO2 from most of Banpu’s EnLink-gathered natural gas production.

In July 2022, Banpu started drilling at the site and hopes to achieve the first injection in December this year.

The company’s second project, the Cotton Cove project, will separate, dispose of, and geologically sequester CO2 generated as a by-product of the company’s natural gas production at the Barnett site and will utilise its midstream assets to do so.

Banpu is targeting commencement of CO2 sequestration activities at Cotton Cove by the end of 2024, subject to the ability to secure all required permits.

Somruedee Chaimongkol, CEO of Banpu, described the projects as milestones. She said that not only are they a new addition to Banpu’s value chain in the US, but they help the company to reduce greenhouse gases in its business processes to minimise potential environmental impacts.

She also notes that they may create the opportunity to generate income from selling carbon credits in the future.

Banpu has operations in two different natural gas shale plays and is one of the top gas-weighted natural gas producers in the US. It has also acquired two gas-fired power plants – Temple I and Temple II and operates a retail electricity business.
